Elven Accuracy

For the longest time, the power elven accuracy seemed like a no-brainer. Didn’t hit your target? Reroll.

Then one day, that assumption was called into question, making me rethink everything I knew about it. Here’s the pertinent text:

Trigger: You make an attack roll and dislike the result.

It never occurred to me that “you dislike the result” could be dependent on whether the DM told you if you hit or not.

Fortunately, this is one of those cases where logic and common sense overrides all else. The current 4th Edition paradigm of “having fun” suggests that guessing whether you’ve hit or not would not be fun. With that said, the player may choose whether to use elven accuracy before the DM’s said anything, after, never—whenever. As long as the player hasn’t moved on to his next action, there is still time to use it.
